Barometre

Barometre is the hot new bar and restaurant in town. Except it’s not actually that new, I’d just not been there until a few months back. And there’s good reason that it’s been number one on Tripadvisor for an age. It’s great.

Whilst a little bit out of the way, down a back street in Gueliz, it’s worth making the effort for, particularly if you’ve had your fill of tagines, couscous and fruit juice. Barometre is a basement restaurant with a cosy cocktail bar, very much in the speakeasy style. And it’s the only place of it’s kind in Marrakech.

Truth be told, when it comes to cocktails I keep it simple, it’s either a vesper or a gin martini. Possibly a champagne cocktail if I fancy something fizzy. So, whilst I have indulged in a cocktail here, I’ve tended to stick to the wine (which is very good indeed, and always served with excellent snacklets). However, as I’ve always sat at the bar (including when eating), I’ve seen some amazing creations produced, with the most amazing effort going into them.

The first time I came here was on Christmas day, popping in for a quick drink before going to L’Annexe opposite for dinner. I immediately regretted not eating at Barometre (it had been a toss up between the two), but felt bad cancelling so late. This came up in conversation with Soufiane, one of the owners, and the next thing I know he’s mentioned it to the chef and I’m being presented with a beautiful, light and fresh crab and avocado dish:

Suffice to say that I headed straight back on my next trip and had a full meal:

Just because it’s a bit more sociable and also because, when dining alone, particularly at really popular, ‘must book’ places, I feel a bit guilty taking up a whole table, I’ve sat at the bar each time (my choice), but there is a proper restaurant side as well:

What’s really lovely, great drinks and food aside, is that it’s so friendly. Having popped in that first time for an hour and chatted with the team, I was welcomed back several months later like an old friend. By my third visit I was ready to move in! I now have ‘my’ stool at the bar, just as I do at my favourite bar at home.

I would recommend booking and when you go – and you must – say hi from me! (And don’t sit on my stool)
